Born in Istanbul, Murat Morova graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts of Marmara University in 1977. Participated in solo and group shows at Urart Art Gallery from 1988 to 1998. His works began being exhibited at Galeri Nev (Ankara and Istanbul) from 2000’s on.
The subjects and sources, such as the abreast state of the East and the West; the liaison between an indivudual’s internal and external nature; mysticism, tradition, body, Islam and Sufism form the essence of Morova’s realm of sense. Correspondingly he appeals for the “other” materials in his works; he reproduces non-traditional materials that the industrial society turn into waste, such as nylon, tar and fiberglass.
Among the numerous group shows he’s taken part in are 49th Venice Bienial (2001), 2nd Buenos Aires Bienial, Buenos Aires (2002), “Musulmans” Parc de la Villette, Paris (2004), Triennale Bovisa, Milan (2008), “Istanbul Art Affair”, Frankfurt (2008), “Taswir-Islamische Bildwelten und Moderne”, Martin Gropius Bau, Berlin (2009), “From Traditional to Contemporary” Istanbul Modern (2010), “Journeys – Wanderings in Contemporary Turkey”, Espace Culturel Louis Vuitton, Paris (2012) and “Unhappy Ready-Made”, Kuad Gallery, Istanbul (2014).
The artist currently lives and works in Istanbul.
